Nine courageous, high profile, local businesspeople swapped the boardroom for the dance floor, on Saturday 29 June, to raise much-needed funds for children’s charity Brainwave.

The dancers were each paired up with a professional dancer from Cadmans Dance Centre and have been training for months in preparation for the Strictly Summer event which was held at The Mere Golf Resort and Spa.

All nine of the couples entertained the audience with their fabulous routines, impressing the judges: Brainwave Patrons Lord and Lady Fellowes, Nigel Horrocks of Nigel and Janice Horrocks Dance Promotions and Jonathan Chianca who is a local professional choreographer and creator of Diva Fever dance class.

On the night, Kunal Trehan and his professional dancing partner Victoria Bennett wowed the audience and the judges with a fantastic Cha-Cha routine and they won joint first place alongside Ann-Marie Atkins and her professional dancing partner Callam Thomson who were equally as impressive performing the Tango. The couples will now share the highly coveted Brainwave Trophy!

Event organiser and Brainwave Fundraiser, Joanne Freeman said: ‘Our Strictly Summer event was full of fun and sparkles. We couldn’t have asked for a more dedicated group of dancers that were determined to raise as much money as possible for our charity. The money is still coming in but so far we have raised over £15,000 which is just incredible!’

Brainwave is a UK national children’s charity that helps children with disabilities and additional needs to achieve greater independence.

The charity does not receive any government funding and relies on voluntary donations to run its three permanent centres in Somerset, Essex and Warrington.

Joanne went on to say: ‘The money raised from this event will truly make a difference to the children and families we see at Brainwave.

‘I would like to thank everyone who was involved in making the event such a success, including: the wonderful dancing couples, the brilliant judges, Cadmans Dance Centre for providing excellent professional dancers and training, The Mere Golf Resort and Spa for hosting the event, Event Station for fantastic light and sound support and last but not least our wonderful MC, Beverley Uddin-Khandakar.

‘This is the second year we have put on this event and from all the families, staff and volunteers at Brainwave we would like to send a big thank you to everyone that attended, supported this event and generously donated on the night. We can’t wait to do it all again next year!’
