Paignton, Crewkerne and Crediton shops reopen

We are delighted to welcome back customers to our Paignton, Crewkerne and Crediton retail shops. As with Langport and Minehead that opened previously, we have worked hard to ensure we are creating a safe environment. Please read our previous updates which explain the measures we are putting in place in all our shops to protect our staff, volunteers and customers.

We now have five shops open, Minehead, Langport, Paignton, Crewkerne and Crediton. All of these shops are currently open from Tuesday - Saturday, 10am - 4pm.

Many thanks to our loyal customers who have been patient with us whilst we have conducted a phased reopening of our shops. We are planning on opening more shortly with the hope to have all our shops reopened in the next few months.

Langport shop to reopen from Monday 10 August

We are pleased to announce that our retail shop in Langport will reopen on Monday 10 August 2020 from 11am. The shop has undergone an extensive refit whilst it has been temporarily closed and we can't wait to welcome customers back to see the shop's new look.

As with our Minehead shop that reopened in June, we are following current Government guidelines to create a safe environment.

  • A thorough risk assessment has been carried out and COVID-19 secure measures have been implemented.
  • We are limiting the number of staff and volunteers in the shop.
  • Staff and volunteers are being provided with PPE.
  • A thorough cleaning schedule has been put into place.
  • Perspex screens have been installed at till points.
  • Hand sanitising stations have been installed.
  • We are only allowing three customers in the shop at any one time.
  • The changing rooms will be closed for the time being.

We are asking our customers to:

  • Please do not enter the shop if you or someone you live with has symptoms of COVID-19.
  • Wear a face-covering in our shops, unless you are exempt. This is in line with Government policy that came in on 24 July 2020.
  • Pay by card where possible.
  • Sanitise your hands when entering the shop.
  • Keep your distance from other customers and, also, staff and volunteers.

We will be accepting donations from the public at our Langport shop. So, if you are getting ready to donate items to Brainwave, here is how you can help us:

  • Wherever possible, put clothes and textiles through the washing machine and wipe down solid surfaces.
  • Ask yourself, “Would someone I know buy this?” If the answer is “Yes”, we would love to receive it.
  • Call ahead when you are ready to donate, to check the best time for your local shop.
  • Stagger your donations, rather than bringing everything in at once.
  • Remember to Gift Aid your donation, this scheme allows charities to claim 25 percent extra on the sale of your donations. To save time, you can download, print and fill out our Gift Aid Donor Form before your visit. Hand your completed form over to a member of our shop team and they'll issue you with a unique Donor Card for your future donations.

Thank you to all of our wonderful customers for their continued support. If you have any questions, please email: [email protected]

Next steps for our retail shops

Last month we provided information on our plans for a phased approach to the reopening of our retail shops, with Minehead being the first on 15 June.

The team has been working hard making the necessary preparations for more shops to open. However, we need to do this safely, whilst also carefully managing the organisation's finances too. Whilst the shops are closed, we are also taking the opportunity to carry out essential repairs and any refitting too, as required.

Most of our Retail Team are on furlough leave and therefore the reopening of shops requires us to bring people back into the organisation, and we need to be confident that the working environment is safe for them, our team of volunteers, and our customers. We also need to ensure that these [shops] are in the best possible shape, to generate vital funds for the charity going forward.

There will be more shops opening in August, and we will provide further information about these soon. Safety is a priority for us, so deep cleaning, one way systems and appropriate PPE are all being implemented. Over the coming months, as well as paid staff, we hope to see the return of our team of dedicated volunteers too, without whom we wouldn’t be able to achieve all we do.

If you are planning a visit to our Minehead shop, please view the update from 9 June (below) about the steps we've taken to create a safe environment and the guidance we've supplied on donating items to the shop. As of 24 July 2020, it is mandatory to wear a face-covering in shops. Some people are exempt due to age and health conditions. Find out more here.

A phased reopening of our retail shops, starting with Minehead on Monday 15 June

During the ‘lockdown’ period many of us have no doubt used the time to have a ‘declutter’. Being confined to our homes has given people the time to get to the very backs of their wardrobes, into every corner of the attic, and even the nooks and crannies of the garage.

Therefore as lockdown restrictions ease, we at Brainwave expect and hope that there will be many items that our supporters and the public would like to donate to us – clothes, books, CDs, DVDs, and homewares, perhaps even more than we would have received if shops had been open since the end of March.

We are busy planning all the systems we need to support a phased reopening of our high street shops, starting with Minehead on 15 June. Initially, the Minehead shop will be open between the hours of 10am - 4pm, Monday - Friday. Customers are encouraged to pay by card, if possible.

Just like the communities our shops are part of, each Brainwave shop is unique, and the safety measures needed to reopen each one will depend on the size of each shop and the volunteers available to run it.

We are following government advice and taking steps to create a safe environment.

That means ensuring there is space for social distancing, that staff and volunteers have the personal protective equipment they need and that all surfaces, doors and equipment are regularly cleaned. It also means isolating donated items for 72 hours.

Our shops typically have just one or two paid staff members working with a team of volunteers. We rely on 200 volunteers to keep our shops open and their health and wellbeing is a priority. As many of them are vulnerable we are very aware of our responsibility to keep them safe. We would love to hear from you if you would like to volunteer with us once our shops reopen. You can register your interest online HERE

As shops reopen, we will be able to accept donations from the public.
